Willard “Bill” McCrone announces his candidacy for Mayor of Monterey
MONTEREY, CA – Bill McCrone has announced his candidacy for the office of Mayor for the City of Monterey in the upcoming election on November 6, 2018. His experience and qualifications include 9 years U.S. Army service, a former law practice specializing in real estate and business (38 years), service as an Army civil engineer, Planning Commissioner (19 years), Parks and Recreation Commissioner (10 years) and community volunteer.
“I am running for Mayor because the current City Council, led by incumbent Mayor Clyde Roberson, has let the public down by conducting important public business in closed session, without disclosure to or input from the public. As one result of this avoidance of transparency, millions of dollars have been given away to wealthy private merchants that would be better used to benefit Monterey residents by building out the Waterfront Master Plan, the Downtown Specific Plan, and even to substantially reduce or eliminate resident user fees at the Sports Center.
This Council has allowed heavy campaign funding by waterfront commercial interests to shift the focus of city business away from far more important issues such as the creation of workforce housing and budget oversight. I will propose an ordinance that will limit the influence of campaign contributions. A city where the people who work here and grow up here cannot afford to live here is not sustainable. Instead of a community of civic- minded small-town citizens we were when I moved here 40 years ago, Monterey is well on its way to becoming an impersonal “resort city”. This has been a crisis for many years but this Mayor and Council have done no more than occasionally talk about it. We can do much better to build a sustainable future for Monterey and I will initiate concrete actions to encourage the creation of necessary workforce housing.
Among other goals I will seek to achieve are reintegration of the downtown with the waterfront, accountability and attentive oversight for budget decisions that has been sorely lacking by this Mayor, and furthering a partnership with State Parks to open our extraordinary adobes. I know that working together in a transparent manner, we can create a vibrant and livable city that is attractive for residents and visitors alike, and one where the Council puts Residents First.
McCrone, a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point, is a decorated Vietnam War veteran and, as a result of his combat service, is a disabled veteran. Bill has lived in Monterey for over 40 years. He and his wife Carol have raised three children here, all of whom have attended our public schools.
